Starting my own law firm was a huge step for me. It required a lot of hard work and dedication, but it has also been an incredibly rewarding experience. There were several reasons why I started my own firm. The primary reason was to have more control over my time and workload. I was tired of having work dumped on my desk on Friday afternoons or having to meet short deadlines imposed by others. I wanted to be in control of my life and not subject to the whims of partners, clients who were not my own, or billable hour requirements.

This is part two of a three part series on How to Pass the Bar Exam on Your First Try. This part focuses on the content that is on the exam, how to organize, learn, and memorize it. You can download a sample outline used in the video at Blawg.Law on the Resources Page.
The bar exam is not the same as a law school exam. It’s a completely different animal. You need to focus on three over arching concepts: context, content, and performance. If you fail in any of these concepts, you will likely fail the exam. I was an average student at an average law school. The overall pass rate for the California bar exam that I took was 31%. I passed on my first try and went on to pass two more bar exams in other states. In this three part series, I show you how I leveraged each of the concepts above to pass three bar exams on the first try.
In this video, I talk about how to find and use resources to learn the main law school subjects fast, which will help you do better in class and establish a foundational outline that you can use to study for the bar exam.
Hi, I’m Patrick Monroe. I’ve been a lawyer for well over a decade. I spent nearly four years at a large law firm. But most of my career has been spent working for myself in my own law practice. When I graduated law school, there were very few jobs. I couldn’t find a job, but I had a lot of student loan debt, and I also had a lot of insecurity about being a lawyer, let alone about being successful.
I started my own practice, and after a lot of hard work and a lot of lessons learned, I achieved what I consider to be my definition of success, which was to have a solid income and lots of free time to also do the things that I love doing, which are traveling, spending time with friends and family and pursuing other interests outside of the practice of law.
I decided to create this website for people like you who want to have successful careers and more fulfilling lives. I learned a lot of lessons in building my own practice. I wanted to share them with you. My goal is for you to be able to expedite your success, whatever your definition of success is, and to hopefully avoid many of the pitfalls that we as lawyers fall into. So if you like what you see, go over to the post page, check out some topics that may interest you, and sign up for my monthly email, which will have more strategies for success and practical tips for having a fulfilling career as a lawyer. Thanks for watching, and I hope you enjoy it.
